Love Is Stronger Than Strong

Tonight, as I put my 6yo to bed, I asked her what makes our family good? What makes it strong? She looked at me and smiled in a way that implied “Silly Mommy, that’s SO easy.” I asked her what she thought and she replied: “Mom, love is stronger than strong. We love each other.” My heart could have burst right then and there. She gets it. Love is what makes us strong—as individuals, as families, as communities, as a nation, as the whole of humanity. Not divisiveness. Not looking within—to numero uno. We are strong when we look to … Continue reading Love Is Stronger Than Strong

2016 Reading in Review: My Top 3 Books

2016 ended up being an interesting year of reading. Like previous years, I set a goal to read 52 books—one for each week. In that regard, I failed miserably with a mere 21. Between going back to work, being exhausted and sick for 9 months, moving across country, and then having a newborn at home, I just fell short. But it wasn’t a total bust because I broadened my horizons and explored a new format: the graphic novel. I have attempted to read graphic novels in the past, but found them frustrating. Text heavy panels made the art feel secondary … Continue reading 2016 Reading in Review: My Top 3 Books

NaNoWriMo Prep

It’s that time of year again! NanoWrimo! I always get a little excited at the possibility of drafting an entire novel in 30 days. I’ve tried the whole “pantsing” thing and I stink at it. I guess I like to know where my story is going ahead of time—even if I just use a loose outline. I already have my entire NanoWrimo novel outlined and ready to go for next month. My book idea is the same as last year’s: a girl visits Arches National Park with her family and discovers that the arches are actually portals to another world. … Continue reading NaNoWriMo Prep

Artist Highlight: Jess Smart Smiley

I met Jess Smart Smiley almost 4 years ago at LTUE, a sci-fi/fantasy writing conference. I was perusing the different author/illustrator tables when I came across Jess’s booth. We chatted for a few minutes–he had recently published Upside Down: A Vampire Tale and he asked me if I was a writer. I told him I had an idea for a book and he actually seemed interested, so I elaborated. He told me how awesome it sounded, which was pretty neat. Honestly, it was the first time someone, other than a family member, showed genuine interest in and excitement for something … Continue reading Artist Highlight: Jess Smart Smiley

Too Much Filler Crap

Back in January, I noticed that Goodreads had the option of setting up a personal reading challenge for the year. I thought, “Yeah! That would be great.” So I set my goal for 52. Easy peasy–a mere book per week. Now here I am, in week 39, and I have completed 24 books. What the heck? //giphy.com/embed/i9nkolRQgbN9C I guess I’m not too far behind–I only have to read about 1.8 books a week for the remainder of the year. Still though, I look at some of my friends and I think “How on earth do they have the time to … Continue reading Too Much Filler Crap

Update + Some Inspiration

My march writing goals are going along quite well, although they have been slightly revised. John and I have restructured how we’re approaching Mobster Monsters–we’re sitting down and hashing out what each letter will be. This way I’m not writing a limerick that his illustrations have to conform to, and he’s not illustrating something that I then have to write a limerick for. We have our pow wow and then break, with each of us knowing what to do for each letter. So far, we have reached the letter K. So my revised goal for March is to get through … Continue reading Update + Some Inspiration

March Writing Goals

Confession–I have a super difficult time setting realistic goals. Its not that I have a hard time making goals. For example: Write a 50,000 word novel every month for a whole year? Sounds great! Wake up at 4:30AM to start writing (when I normally wake up at 8AM)? Sure! Don’t go to bed until I’ve written X number of words (usually something like 3,000 when I haven’t been writing at all)? Go for it! See? No problem whatsoever at setting goals. Its just the realistic ones that allude me. Hence why one of my writing resolutions this year is to … Continue reading March Writing Goals

The Brat Prince Lestat is BACK!

I’ve been hoping all week that Anne Rice’s new book would be something about vampires and she delivered! I wanted something that would redeem vampires from the last decade of castrated-angst-invested-sparkly wannabees. Don’t get me wrong–I give Stephanie Meyer props for turning a complete genre on its head, but come on, its time that the head be put back on straight. Anne Rice’s new book, Prince Lestat, is a sequel to the first five books in the Vampire Chronicles. And it looks like she will be doing another series of vampire books, as she has already signed a contract for … Continue reading The Brat Prince Lestat is BACK!

LtUE: Day 3 + Final Thoughts

I hope that you have enjoyed my recap of LtUE thus far. Today I’m going to wrap up the final day and my overall impressions of the conference. I only went to one panel on Saturday and it was on the Pros and Cons of Self-publishing. My thoughts and views on self-publishing have come a long way in the last year thanks to last February’s LtUE. You can read about just how big of a 180 I made in this post. Basically, self-publishing can be pretty awesome. There are definite drawbacks, but some pretty sweet payoffs as well. For me, … Continue reading LtUE: Day 3 + Final Thoughts
