IMWAYR – August 17, 2020

The weekly post where I recap some of the KidLit books I’ve been reading. Ocasionally, I’ll also talk about some adult fiction books as well.

Be sure to check out Teach Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers to see what other Kidlit readers are reading. Because, you know, we can never have too many books in our TBR piles.

Picture Books

Three Squeezes
written by Chris Pratt
illustrated by Chris Sheban
(Roaring Brook Press, 2020)

I am so very excited for this one as it is my friend, Jason’s, debut picture book! It is a beautiful and heart warming story. Perfect for snuggling with your little one before bedtime. Chris Sheban’s illustrations are gorgeous and warm. I am giving away a signed copy. See the bottom of this post on how to enter.

Lions & Cheetahs & Rhinos, Oh My!
by John Platt and Moira Rose Donohue
Animal artwork by children in Sub-Saharan Africa
(Sleeping Bear Press, 2020)

Another friend, Moira’s, new informational nonfiction book just came out this past weekend as well! Moira’s nonfiction work is always so engaging. She and John Platt, who runs the nonprofit How to Draw a Lion, collaborated on this beautiful book. And it is extra special because all of the illustrations are done by children in John’s art class in Sub-Saharan Africa. Read more about their collaboration here.

While We Can’t Hug
written by Eoin McLaughlin
illustrated by Polly Dunbar
(Faber & Faber, 2020)

This book is adorable! I loved their first book, THE HUG and this book is every bit as cute. And it is very timely. The illustrations are sweet and vibrant. This is a perfect book for those with little who are having a hard time not being about to hug their friends/extended family. It shows all the many ways we can show our love while still social distancing.

Young Adult

Girls Save the World in this One
by Ash Parsons
(Philomel Books, 2020)

I was first drawn to this book because of the cover and title. And then the premise sealed the deal. A group of friends attend a zombie convention (think Comic Con except for the Walking Dead) when the actual zombie apocalypse breaks out. It was just the right mix of snarky humor, zombie suspense, and friend drama.

I am very excited to be giving away a autographed copy of Three Squeezes by Jason Pratt and Christ Sheban! I’ll announce a winner next Monday. If you’d like to enter, comment below. Get additional entries by retweeting my giveaway post on twitter, and/or commenting on the giveaway post on my Facebook page. (Shipping only in the USA–sorry!)

  1. Oh, I love the idea of Three Squeezes, Becky, & the others are new to me, too. The zombie YA sounds like a great ‘getaway’! Thanks for all of them!

  2. Congrats to your friends on their new books—that’s so exciting! While We Can’t Hug looks wonderful, although it’s kind of horrifying that social distancing has been going on so long that people have had time to write and publish books during it. I’ll pass on the giveaway, but thanks for the great post!

  3. While We Can’t Hug seems like a good book to pick up at this time. I had to do a double take on your first one, I thought it was written by the actor Chris Pratt at first, and I was like, oh man, another actor with a picture book. But congrats to your friend, not easy to debut right now. I will try to check that one out sometimes as well. Thanks for the post!
