If you are a fan of Star Trek, you have to check out this new series by Golden books. They have another about Mr. Spock (which is just a cute) and one about Tribbles. I watch The Next Generation with my kids, so it was fun to read these with them.

I have been looking for a picture book that explains how everything is made from stardust, and I think that this books does a great job. I read this with my nine-year-old and it was fun talking about how the universe came to be. She was amazed at the thought that most everything we see was made during a star explosion. While some of the nuances are still pretty big to grasp, this is an excellent intro to get you talking about the science of the universe.

I loved Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy. I mean it is one of my favorite YA novels from the past ten years. So it took me awhile to pick up her next series, mostly because it is so hard to catch lightning in a bottle. twice. I was so excited to discover that many of the things I loved about her first series–beautiful prose, epic world building, lovable characters–I also loved about Strange the Dreamer as well. I actually listened to the audiobook, and Steve West did a great job. I can’t wait to pick up the 2nd in the duology.

They’re really cute. The text is a lot of fun and the illustrations pack a ton of Easter eggs from the original series that fans will recognize.

My daughter really liked the first book of Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but I’m embarrassed to say I’ve not yet read any of Laini Taylor’s works, yet. I checked out Strange the Dreamer a couple months back and had to return it before I got to it. I’ve heard such great things and so I hope to get back to it again, soon. I haven’t yet read The Stuff of Stars, so I appreciate what you’ve shared here. I hope you have a wonderful reading week, Rebecca!

Both series are fantastic, but (having not read the conclusion of the Strange the Dreamer duology) Daughter of Smoke and Bone just slightly edges it out. I’ll check back in after I’ve read the 2nd one though!

I’m looking forward to reading The Stuff of Stars. I’ve started collecting good nonfiction picture books for use when I am teaching on call.
