Poetry Friday – Poetry Book Giveaway!

I checked this one out from the library not too long ago, and my family absolutely LOVED it. I have an 8-year-old and an 18-month-old. My husband and I would each take turns reading a few poems each night before bedtime. My daughter, without fail, would beg for “just one more” poem to be read.

The poems are really funny. Like belly-laugh-my-cheeks-hurt funny. (I guess that makes me an immature grown-up? YES, I’ll take it!) Not only were Harris’ poems hilarious, but many of them also had a lot of heart. He does not pander to kids, but yet is able to really convey some great messages (think Shel Silverstein’s “Listen to the Mustn’ts”).

Another aspect of this book that was fantastic is that it begs to be read aloud. The poems were just the right length and the humor really popped when reading to the family. I especially enjoyed the poems that went back and forth between two characters because I would read one side, and my daughter would read the other.

The illustrations are great too, and add a lot to the humor. Not only do the they support the poems, but they are actually vital to some of them. I liked the banter back and forth between poet and illustrator too.

This is they type of collection that inspires me to sit down and write. The poems read so effortlessly that I think, Man, I want to write a collection of poems.  And then I sit down and try, and realize how hard it is to write something so good. But it still makes me want to keep trying! Chris Harris really is a great children’t poet.

  2. Great job reviewing what must be a great book! I haven't read it yet….so I'm delighted to see that you are hosting a giveaway. I've included a link to this blog post in mine so others can see your review too. Whew! What a week. I've been trying too hard to write a poem for the TLD challenge of write a poem about what you see out of your window. When I find myself trying too hard I stop, take a step back and try to play a bit. I found some great old-timey photos at the Library of Congress and used one as a prompt….because a computer screen can be a window to the past, right?   6. Rebecca, from one immature grown-up to another, YAY for featuring this book! My hubby discovered it when it first came out, and we bought it. For ourselves. We did take it on a trip, meeting up with our kids, and shared some of the poems. OUR kids are in their 20s – Ha! :0) Thanks so much for hosting today!

  11. I gifted this book to some young friends several months ago (based on reviews I had read), and just received a copy this week that I requested from the library. Your post makes me realize that I need to make time to read it. Thanks for hosting our gathering this week.

I love it when a book “begs to be read aloud.” And you last paragraph about being inspired to write when you read the poems makes me think it would be great in a classroom library, so I shared a link to your post on both Twitter and FB, hoping some of my T-friends check it out.   15. “I'm just No Good at Rhyming” looks like a fun book. I haven't been writing poetry long and thought I'd never write rhyming poetry; however, I find myself defaulting to rhyme often.

  18. This is on my TBR list for 2018! I checked it out from my public library, but at the time I had other titles that kept pushing it to the bottom. Your post has renewed my interest and excitement to get my hands on it again. Who knows, maybe I'll be a winner and will have my own copy? Thank you for hosting!

  20. Thanks for hosting, Rebecca. I had a hard time choosing between two poems this week so I posted both of them. And for a change I posted them at the blog I co-write with four other kids book writers, Books Around the Table. I also posted information about and a link to The Skagit River Poetry Festival happening this weekend in La Conner, WA. Robert Pinsky will be there, as will both of the poets whose poems I chose to post.

  26. I've been hearing such good things about this book. Now I want to read it even more! I did laugh at “The Loser's CHeer.” It reminds me of my daughter's and my experience with the local canoe race. One year we managed to come in first (for the mother-daughter category) and last (as in last boat out of the river)! We love telling people how we came in first and last in the same race.

  29. Hi Rebecca.You have a super sense of humor. I am tickled to know this book because I will be buying it to tote to school for my read-aloud days (take me out of the runningfor winning.) Today in first grade we performed Boa Constrictor from the Superlative Shel S. collection, so I am truly one who will glom onto this book, which I didn't know. Plus, Lane Smith! ITS's A BOOK is still one of my faves. Applause for you, your young family of book lovers & for your hosting.p.s. I think you all would luv a p.b. called CREEPY CARROTS.
