Just Finished

My 4 year-old grabbed this one off the shelf at the library this week. It is really cute and not exactly a quiet book. The little girl starts writing a story about her kitten, but the kitten wants her to add in more exciting things. I always enjoy reading books like this from an author/illustrator.

I was so excited for this one. I had heard about it back in 2018 and couldn’t wait to pick up a copy. We actually read it as a family last fall, but I never got to talk about it here on the blog. My 10 year old and 4 year old enjoyed reading one story each night. There were even some that gave me the creeps. But nearly all of the stories were written in such a way that your imagination did worse than the actual description. My 4yo does like creepy stuff, so know that this is shelved as a YA so your mileage may vary. It definitely wasn’t too creepy to read aloud with my daughter. If you like creepy, check it out.

I requested this one from the library because I really liked the cover and I also loved Snapdragon by Kat Leyh. While Snapdragon was a middle grade graphic novel, Thirsty Mermaids is a new adult graphic novel about 3 mermaid friends who change themselves into humans but they don’t know how to change themselves back. It was funny and witty. The book celebrates a diversity in not only color and sexual orientation, but in body types as well. It was nice to see skinny girls, muscular girls and chubby girls all being showcased as strong women. *Note*–this is a new adult book and contains some nudity and good amounts of alcohol consumption.
