I am always on the lookout for monster picture books and this one was adorable. I loved how it turned the normal monster in the closet on its head a bit. The illustrations we vibrant and fun too.
by Carter Goodrich
(Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2019)
I originally checked this one out because my husband is a big fan of Carter Goodrich. This book is beautiful and wonderful. Carter Goodrich’s character design is just fantastic. And the story is heartfelt. I can sometimes relate to the little cactus in this one.
Middle Grade
by Jen Lee
(Nobrow Press, 2017)
This graphic novel was a fun twist on a common story that deals with loyalty and friendship. I like how the story unfolds bit by bit without giving too much away. I still had some questions at the end, so I hope that there may be a sequel.
Young Adult
by Guillermo del Toro and Cornelia Funke
(Katherine Tegen Books, 2019)
Oh. My. Goodness. I cannot express how much I LOVED this book. It helps that I really like the film, but this book is so much more. Cornelia Funke has managed to enrich the story by weaving in even more fairy tale elements. I read this with my 10-year-old daughter and she enjoyed it as well. If you have seen the movie, the book does not shy away from the few violent scenes, so be aware of that. But I feel like it doesn’t dwell on them either. The illustrations were beautiful. Everything about this book was gorgeous. Near perfect dark fantasy.

Nobody Hugs A Cactus is on my list, & I’ve not heard of the Cornelia Funke book or had forgotten if I have. I do love her other books! That young boy on the bed looking at the monsters in the monster book looks as if her has things (like monsters) well under control – very fun! Garbage Night sounds intriguing, too. Thanks, Rebecca.

Thanks for the head’s up about Pan’s Labyrinth: The Labyrinth of the Faun. I have enjoyed everything of Cornelia Funk’s that I’ve read so far.
I have one cactus plant that I inherited from an elderly neighbour. All I can say is that as much as I admire it, there is no way I would hug it. Just getting too close to it can cause grief!

There are a few books here I have been meaning to get to for a while and have not like Cactus, but I have missed hearing about Pan’s Labyrinth. My family spent quite a lot of time reading Cornelia Funke books out loud and maybe we should look for this one too. Thanks for the post!
