Hello and Happy Poetry Friday! Like so many, life has been a ball of crazy this past week. My daughter’s spring break has been extended another week. And my husband just found out that they are moving the rest of the semester at Ringling College of Art & Design to online. This will be particularly difficult since Ringling is an art school. We are doing our best to practice social distancing. More on that at the end of the post.
This week, I wanted to share another one of the poems that I wrote for Laura’s poetry challenge back in February. Ruth Lehrer shared a beautiful photo overlooking an icy pond. The water looked like glass and reflected the trees and sky. Here is what I came up with.
Ghost-like reflections
On an icy winter day
Waiting for the thaw
As I was reflecting this post, it got me thinking about how surreal everything feels right now. The potential impact from COVID-19 is chilling and feels a bit like an icy winter day. One that you can’t quite shake, even once you’re bundled up in blanket by the fire. As things have progressed, we have received multiple calls from the school with updates. And each time I need to calmly quell my daughter’s fears. We are doing our best to stay away from large crowds and avoid the spread. I know that if/when we get the virus, we won’t be impacted too much. But we do not want to help spread it to those who it could really hurt. I am hopeful and definitely not panicking, but it is a chilling situation.
This weekend was supposed to be our last week of Girl Scout cookie booths. But, because of the virus, GSUSA has cancelled the remainder of our cookie booths (a good precaution). Our troop, who are saving for a big trip to Savannah, GA, still has an inventory of about 200 boxes to sell. Any unsold boxes will pull from the money they have earned. I don’t feel comfortable asking them to go out and sell, so we have come up with another solution.

Our first responders are working tirelessly to serve our community. So we have decided that every box of cookies sold online, we will donate to the local fire department. If you would like to donate a box, please follow these instructions.
- Click the link below
- Enter the # of boxes you’d like to donate in the THIN MINTS box
- DO NOT put them in the “Donate” box as this does not come from our inventory
- Select “Girl Delivered” and then check out normally
- We will deliver the cookies at the end of next week
- https://digitalcookie.girlscouts.org/scout/samantha436228
We will deliver the cookies at the end of next week. Thank you for any support. Please everyone stay safe!
Like your haiku, I think we’re all “waiting for the thaw!” Indeed, things feel like they’re upside-down these days. And doesn’t the term “social distancing” seem like an oxymoron??

Hope your daughter sells all the cookies! I wish I could buy some! Thanks for the poetry, and stay healthy. Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com

Who knows how long we’ll have to wait for the COVID-19 thaw. Such a great solution to your extra cookie situation, though! As a former GS leader myself, it always felt especially good to donate boxes within our own community.
